The Lake Mendota Monster
Native stories speak or dark spirits in the waters of Lake Mendota. But the earliest reports of the modern age begin in the 186os. A sinuous, seventy-root beast with a serpent’s head, powerful jaws, great glassy eyes and a slippery body or earthy green, the color or a rotting log. At times playful and at others cruel, the monster of Lake Mendota toys with swimmers and sailors alike. Tickling feet, overturning vessels and snatching away pets who paddle too far from shore.
