Maud and the
Mordiford Dragon

Maud preferred to spend her time on her own, usually mucking about in the forests near her village, Mordiford, scheming on how to somehow convincer her parents to let her have a pet, oh, any pet would do really, just some little creature she could care for and shower with love, and in turn be loved back.

The day had begun and half transpired as uneventfully as any other day for young Maud when on her usual wandering she happened upon a rustling in the brush, she must have thought it was a kitten, or a small pup perhaps, but to her absolute delight it turned out to be a strange little critter, bright green, with a long tail and tiny translucent wings. Back home her parents, recognizing a wyvern when they saw one, wanted nothing to do with it, and told Maud to take it back to where she found it and under no circumstances could she keep it. Adventurous as she was, she was also well behaved, and so she did as she was told, however, no one said she couldn’t fashion the little critter a lovely little nest, and give it some warm milk, which is also, exactly what she did. The next day she brought more milk, and in the evening some more, she cuddled the little beastie, pet his short snout, and rubbed his little clawed feet, only placing him back in his little nest once he had fallen asleep.

In no time it would seem the little dragon did what most pup critters are known to do, he grew. Now an adolescent dragon, the little bit of milk was not enough to satiate his growing dragon hunger, so he did what dragons are known to do, he devoured a few of the local livestock. This continued over time until a local shepherd became so enraged he took up arms to go and slay the young dragon. This brave man soon became the young dragons first taste of human flesh, which he would conclude to be much tastier than mutton.

Now fully grown the beast terrorized the surrounding villages, consuming whatever he had the taste for, in whatever quantity he had a hunger for. Yet, no matter his desire for the meat of men, he still loved his little Maud, welcoming her kind petting, and nuzzling in to her sweet embrace. The rest of the story ends as most tales of dragons do, so I’ll leave it here, wishing to imagine our shy little Maud living out her days in the embrace of her one true, and most fearsome friend.
