Deltox Marsh Monster
The Wisconsin Yeti

Some claim it’s in our genes, a little under half of all Wisconsinites claim to have family that immigrated to the US from Germany, while others think it’s the cold winters, whatever it is, Wisconsinites like to imbibe. Wisconsin ranks 21st by population, but 4th in consumption of alcohol, liqueur stores outnumber groceries 3 to 1, and here the things that go bump in the night, might just do so because they’re having a hard time keeping their balance.

Back in 1964, three hunters were out in the Deltox Marsh, a small shallow marsh and wetland on the Wolf River, a little south of Freemont, just east of Boom Island. Two of them had broken off to drive deer toward the third, and while methodically trudging through ankle deep snow, they saw him. A powerfully built creature, lumbering through the sedge on its hind legs, eight or nine feet tall. He was covered in long dark brown hair except for his face and hands which had a grayish blue coloring, and they guessed he weighed around 600 pounds. They watched in complete silence as he crossed about 20 feet in front of them, heading toward the third man. He also saw the beast from his tree stand and later said he would have shot the creature except that it looked too much like a man.

The following week a group of 12 hunters were in the marsh. They also spread out in a line to drive deer ahead of them. One after the other saw the creature as it again passed by about 20 feet out. At times it seemed to be watching them, almost playing, as they moved forward, it moved further out, as they backed off it moved towards them.

A local parks warden also claimed to have seen the creature, or at least found where it was bedding down. He described a large area of flattened vegetation. He reckoned that the creature was vegetarian since the canary grass had been eaten down to the water line, but a deer carcass nearby had been left untouched. He also found a large cache of beer cans and bottles that had been drunk dry.
