Years ago, as settlers were crossing Eastern New Mexico they came across 11 small lakes. Unable to see the bottom they decided to try to find out the depth with a large rock and a long rope. When that proved inadequate, they tied several pieces of rope together and tried again. With the same failed results, they concluded that the lakes were bottomless.

From there the lakes, which are not actually bottomless, took on a whole life of their own. It was claimed that a man drowned in one lake and was pulled out of another giving rise to the belief that the lakes were not only connected to one another by a system of underwater tunnels, but also to Carlsbad Caverns 100 miles south. Other stories speak of a giant turtle consuming those who went missing in the lakes, catfish the size of a school bus and even a large jellyfish creature that laboriously made its way out of the lakes and onto dry land. The years saw not just people but horses, cars and an entire herd of sheep swallowed up by the lakes, which might account for the White Ghost Horse many visitors claim to have seen and heard, galloping around the park. But standing out from all the claims is one truly astonishing tall tale.

While encounters range from simple sightings to grabbed legs, bite marks, scratches and bruises as well as being pulled under, the physical descriptions remain consistent, the upper body of a man with eight very strong, tentacle legs, or commonly put, “an Octopusman.” Here’s where the story gets weird. UFO activity is common in the area, in fact the lakes are only about 10 miles East of Roswell, the location of the famed 1947 UFO crash site. Some believe the aliens had a reason to be in the vicinity, they were on their way to a secret alien base that was conducting experiments with creatures here on Earth. Of course, this base had to be well hidden, and where better to hide one than 90 feet underwater in the middle of a desert. Is it possible this creature is an alien, or a human-octopus-hybrid alien experiment gone wrong? Were they on their way back when they crashed, was their experiment left on its own, to fend for himself in a strange new world?
